What is the difference between a physical change and a chemical change?
In Mrs. Worley's class, students used articles, notes, and a hands- on approach to tell if a physical or chemical change had taken place. A Physical change affects a property only physically, like shape or size. A chemical change is changing both the physical and chemical properties of the substance. The main difference? Physical changes are not permanent, chemical changes are permanent.

What is a great life lesson? Learning how to use what you have for what you need!
In Mrs. Hulse's WIN class, students were figuring out a new game- how to play baseball without a bat or bases! They only had a ball! They used shoes for bases and their hand as the bat! It was a nice day and using what they had was a great learning opportunity!

WIN Time Mystery
Students in Mrs. Smith’s English WIN time worked to solve a mystery as they documented evidence regarding the case of the Missing Pumpkin Pie. Higher order thinking skills such as developing a strategic argument, assessing evidence, and proof of truth were put into practice. They thought it was Rufus, the dog, but the culprit used a fork! 😳 Hmmm... I wonder if they solved the mystery?!

You sank my battleship! 🚢
Students in Mrs. Bart's sixth grade math class are playing a version of the classic Battleship game to practice their skills of plotting ordered pairs on a coordinate plane.

In Mrs. Breen's sixth grade art class they do a monthly "Solve the Mystery". Each month is a different artist with a drawing in which students fill out with the correct answers to the questions i.e. Who is the Artist?, What is the name of the Piece?, Where is the Artist from? Where were they born, when did they die? What piece is the Artist most famous or recognized for? Each class has one person drawn from the mystery can and receives an art appropriate prize.
What a great way to learn about artists, and have a fun contest, too!

Where do overused words go when they need to be put to rest? A word graveyard!
Mrs. Smith's 7th grade English classes created a word graveyard on Halloween Day. Words such as "said" and "pretty" had become exceedingly prosaic and needed to be put to rest! Students sought out alternative words using a thesaurus. Groups in each class contributed to the creation of the Overused Word Memorial Graveyard by forging headstones. Surviving words (synonyms) were listed, hence constructing a reference posters for all to use as students revised their short stories.

How do you make spelling fun? You play games!
Mrs. Mercer's WIN class played a game of WORDICAL to practice vocabulary, word building, and spelling skills.
In the game, each player gets 5 random consonant cards. They roll the dice to see what 2 vowels they can work with. The player who builds the highest scoring word wins that round!

Conflict- is it internal or external? Do you know the difference?
In Mrs. Wiley's class, students completed a collaborative group activity where they sorted popular texts on task cards into groups of internal and external conflict.

Pumpkin Pie in a Cup! Just in time for Thanksgiving!
Students learned about reading a recipe! They learned measurements such as tsp for teaspoon, T for Tablespoon, fractions of measuring with cups, "pinch" and "dash", and "garnish" to decorate the tops of our pumpkin pie in a cup. We used a different technique to blend by using a baggie. We discussed all the ways to celebrate being thankful during this time of year. We also tied this into our novel that we are reading currently called "A Long Walk to Water". This was during the war in Sudan 1986 - 2009, when water was such a shortage. Being thankful!

Break ups are hard! Especially with a country!
In Coach Dexter's History class, students wrote "break up" letters to Great Britain, telling the country that we "America" are no longer wanting to be a part of that country and want to be on our own!
What a fun way to learn about our independence!

Where have some of our teachers been this week? San Francisco! They are attending a workshop for Solution Tree Math! All thanks to GEAR UP! We miss them, but know they are learning lots to bring back to their classroom!
