Future Women in Aviation!
Cole Brown, Director of Operations of Tulsa International Airport, invited WRJH STEM girls to learn more about future careers in aviation and aerospace. Students were selected after writing about their interest in aviation. Women are still underrepresented in most STEM fields, so Tulsa International Airport is looking to close opportunity gaps for women in aviation. The girls experienced the Tulsa Air & Space Museum and saw the inside operations of the airport which is like a small city! Some of the highlights were checking out the equipment that clears snow off the runways, learning about Tulsa's impact on the aerospace industry and riding alongside an F-16 that was taxiing down the runway!

🎇Cherokee Heritage Day at WRJH🎇
Our 6th grade Geography students rotated through four different stations provided by our guests from the Cherokee Heritage Center. One station was Butterbean, a game similar to Yahtzee, then Game of Graces where they used sticks to launch a hoop to each other to catch, stick ball, and a story telling station with Robert Lewis, the Cherokee storyteller.
Thank you to the Cherokee Heritage Center for spending the day with us!

What do you do with no WIFI? Jousting!
During the week of no internet, 7th grade Science students spent time wrapping up their unit on energy by building jousting cars! Students were given a bag of materials they could use to build with. The objective was to build a car that would pop your opponent’s balloon while protecting your own. Certain building specifications had to be met. Teams competed in a jousting tournament with the winning team receiving a years worth of bragging rights and a full size candy bar of their choice!

Can you learn about fossils with chocolate chip cookies?
Students in Mrs. Hammack's class are learning about rock layers and fossils. The students are paleontologists today! They have to use their tools to get out as many (chocolate chip) fossils out of the ground (cookie). They have to get each one out without any damage to the fossils.
They found lots of "fossils" today- and didn't eat too many!

How do you finish a unit on energy? You make a jousting car and have a tournament. Potential and Kinetic energy at its finest!

How many uses does a potato have? Ask one of Mrs. Rahn's STEM students!
Students were studying the hazards of space (radiation, extreme temperatures, micro-meteorites) in STEM class. After they learned about EMUs (Extravehicular Mobility Unit or space suits), they designed a suit for their Taternaut then tested it for its ability to withstand orbital debris.

What kind of beak works best?🦅
While learning about adaptations and natural selection, 8th grade science students each got a different bird beak to see which ones were best suited for certain “food types”. They can see how certain traits help species survive and put others at risk.

Pizza boxes aren't just for leftovers! Students made s'mores in solar ovens to demonstrate how heat transfer works. Thank you Papa Johns and Dominos for donating the 67 pizza boxes to make our solar ovens, and parents for all the store ingredients for Mrs. Boyd's class! They were tasty!
