“Storytelling, basket weaving, bow making and all of those traditions we’ve been taught for generations, if those disappear along with the language, then there’s really no aspect making someone Cherokee other than a card,” Robert Lewis said. “Telling these traditions, telling these stories and sharing the knowledge you have, that’s an aspect of being Cherokee.”
For centuries, Native societies successfully used nothing but oral tradition and mnemonic devices, such as the wampum belt, to pass on and preserve the knowledge of these traditions and customs. The past several hundred years, however, the preservation of Native culture has been threatened by genocide, disease and forced assimilation into Western culture.
Robert Lewis is a Cherokee Heritage Storyteller and he virtually visited 5th grade and shared stories, fables and tales of the Cherokee Heritage talking about rabbit, wold, fox, etc. he has been telling stories for years.

Matthew Haney is a Roosa 3rd grader who has Type 1 Diabetes. Roosa wore Blue today to raise awareness for Type 1 Diabetes. Diabetes is a chronic disease in which the body cannot produce enough insulin to control glucose levels. A yearly tradition for 5th grade is a trip to Biztown. While there, the students get a taste of running businesses, paying bills and even earning a paycheck! Students have been “interviewed” for jobs, learning how to write a check and keep a check register. Six students were nominated by their classes to run for either Major or Treasure. The 5th grade citizens will do their civic duty and vote for who should run their beloved town! #CPSZEBRAPRIDE
Roosa Staff Spotlight - Ms. Bart - 5th grade teacher - I graduated from Claremore High School in 2014. I attended Fort Scott Community College and played softball before transferring to NSU where I received my B.S.Ed in Elementary Education. I will graduate in May with my M.Ed in Instructional Leadership. This is my 3rd year teaching, all have been at Roosa. I knew from the age of four years old that I wanted to be a teacher. My mom and grandma were both teachers and I knew I wanted to be just like them. Throughout my years of education they have mentored and inspired me to be the best educator I can be. Congratulations to our eight Site Teacher of the Year recipients. Their colleagues chose them to represent their site for consideration for the 2021-2022 Claremore Public Schools Teacher of the Year, announced later this month.
Over the next several months, each teacher will create a dossier including a personal biography and essays on education issues and trends, community involvement, philosophy of teaching, and the teaching profession. A committee will review these documents, a lesson video and host an interview with each candidate.
Stay tuned to learn more about each of these fantastic teachers and why their peers choose them to represent their school. The District Teacher of the Year will be announced in the spring of 2022.

🎨 Contemporary artist 🎨 Jen Stark was the inspiration for our Drip Painting. This Kindergarten through 5th grade project will hang in the Art Room at Roosa. Stark said "Color is a way to get someone's attention". This project did just that, the kids have enjoyed both the lesson and the painting process. The fact that Stark is a current artist kept the students intrigued especially when they learned she has collaborated with companies such as Google, Vans and MTV. #CPSZEBRAPRIDE

For 100 years, the AAA School Safety Patrol Program has served schools throughout the United States. During that time, countless schoolchildren and advisors have devoted themselves to safety in and around their school. This centennial year of School Safety Patrol was celebrated at Roosa by flying the Safety Patrol flag. AAA School Safety patrollers have gone on to serve as astronauts, scientists, teachers, doctors, professional athletes, Supreme Court justices, Olympians, governors and President of the United States. The Roosa safety patrol consists of 5th grade students who write an essay telling how they are responsible and why they would be a good example for Roosa students. #CPSZEBRAPRIDE

I graduated from Chelsea High School and received my bachelor's degree from the University of Central Oklahoma. I'm in my 6th year at Roosa teaching computer science to kindergarten through 5th grade. I love teaching kids more about the "how" and "why" of technology and computers. I chose to be a teacher because I love learning and being around kids and seeing their personalities develop. I have two children, both who attend Claremore Public Schools. My daughter is in 8th grade at WRJH, and my son is a 4th grader at Roosa. Working with the incredible staff at Roosa inspires me daily! The Pumpkin Elf visited Kindergarten last week and played a few tricks but then left some fun treats for the kids! They enjoyed an afternoon of learning activities with the theme of Orange. #CPSZEBRAPRIDE

Our friends from the Tulsa Zoo stopped by 2nd Grade and presented about owls! We learned so much and were able to get an up close and personal look at real owls and artifacts! #CPSZEBRAPRIDE
A few weeks ago 1st grade asked the question, will Pumpkin Jack sink or float? They discussed the hypothesis and created an experiment to prove it to be true or false. Update on “Pumpkin Jack” - 1st grade learned about the greenhouse effect as Pumpkin Jack is decomposing quicker than normal because of the trap tip and moisture inside. We are not seeing the growth of mold. Students use a magnifying glass for a closer look. #CPSZEBRAPRIDE

Students today use technology more than ever. 5th grade decided to take a step away from technology and look at the latest news printed in the local newspapers.
