RE: State Testing Data
On Thursday, September 30, the Oklahoma State Department of Education (OKSDE) released finalized state test scores from the 2020-021 school year. Students across the state took part in the Oklahoma State Testing Program (OSTP) last spring. Testing included:
Grades - Subject
3 - English Language Arts, Math
4 - English Language Arts, Math
5 - English Language Arts, Math, Science
6 - English Language Arts, Math
7 - English Language Arts, Math
8 - English Language Arts, Math, Science
11 - ACT, State Science Assessment
Grades three and four were first-time test takers due to the pandemic. The results of the tests reflected the impact the COVID-19 pandemic had and continues to have on students’ learning. Claremore Public Schools is committed to utilizing this data and other assessments to identify where student learning is currently and close the gaps that have been created. In addition, all Elementary sites and the Junior High had a 95% or greater percentage of students take the OSTP tests. This is a remarkable level of participation during a pandemic when a federal waiver did not require that rate. While we still made it a priority to maintain the 95% participation, the state ranged between 91% and 92% participation.
The OKSDE is advising districts that due to the ongoing challenges related to COVID-19, testing data from the 2021 school year should not be interpreted as they would in a typical year.
In her press release, Oklahoma Superintendent of Schools Joy Hofmeister said: “The effects of the pandemic will be seen and felt for years to come. There is no quick fix, but we must not and cannot give up. As Oklahomans, we will strengthen our efforts to ensure our kids are learning in a classroom with their peers and their teachers are equipped and supported as well.”
Claremore will use these test results as a baseline for future growth in student learning. These results are one data point and in no way tell us everything about a student’s or school’s overall learning and performance. Our goal is to always focus on each individual student’s growth, define learning gaps and strengths and fill in gaps that may exist.
Since returning to school in August, all K-8th grade students have been given various assessments during the first nine weeks of school to help identify gaps in their learning. These assessments are used to establish W.I.N. (Whatever Is Needed) Time groups, our daily academic intervention period. Teachers are also using district/site assessments to provide specialized instruction and support within regular class periods, in addition to after-school intervention.
How Can I See My Child’s Test Scores?
To access your child’s state testing scores, log in to the Oklahoma State Dept. of Education (OSDE) Parent/Student Testing Portal. To log in to the portal, families must have their student’s unique 10-digit State Testing Number), which is available through the Claremore Public School (CPS) Parent Portal on your child’s report card or on previous OSTP paper parent reports. All OSDE portal accounts have been reset for spring 2021, which means families will need to register even if they’ve logged on before this testing period.
Parent Tool Kit
OSDE has made a toolkit available with webinars and other helpful resources to help you better understand the data.
If you have questions about your child’s scores or a particular school’s scores, please visit your child’s teacher, building counselor, or principal.
What do the student scoring categories mean?
Your student's score fits into one of four levels. Students scoring:
- Advanced may need enrichment opportunities to challenge them with material above grade level.
- Proficient are on track and ready for the next grade or course.
- Basic demonstrates foundational skills and abilities but are still working toward being on track.
- Below Basic may need targeted support in developing skills and abilities to bring them to grade level.
