Claremore High School's Jayen Losh, has been selected as a Gates Scholar and member of The Gates Scholarship Class of 2019. As one of 300 Scholars chosen from a pool of over 36,500 applicants from across the nation, Losh now belongs to an elite group of young leaders—all of whom represent the very pinnacle of academic achievement, service, and commitment.
While this announcement may naturally seem like a finale to years of hard work—and it is—it is the beginning of a new chapter in his life: the college years! Entering college as a Gates Scholar is the start of a journey that begins now, and opens the door to a lifetime of opportunities.
The Gates Scholarship is a highly selective, last-dollar scholarship for exceptional, Pell-eligible, minority, high school seniors. Scholars will receive funding for the full cost of attendance that is not already covered by other financial aid, as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Cost of attendance includes tuition, fees, room, board, books, and transportation, and may cover other personal costs for their entire collegiate career.
In addition to funding the recipient's studies, the scholarship will help Jaylen continue to hone his leadership skills, prepare for professional life, and start building an enduring network of fellow Scholars and other distinguished individuals. Losh will also have access to a range of support services, including mentoring, leadership development, wellness, career guidance, internship and job opportunities, and more.
Enrolling at the University of Oklahoma, Jaylen will pursue an undergraduate degree in physics with the ultimate goal of earning his doctoral degree to become a research physicist.
