Claremore Public Schools is beaming with pride as we celebrate Mr. Bruce Riggs, a Biomedical Sciences teacher at Claremore High School, named one of the Top 10 Finalists for the 2024 Oklahoma Teacher of the Year award. This prestigious honor recognizes the dedication, skill, and passion of educators across the state, and Mr. Riggs' commitment to inspiring the next generation of healthcare professionals has earned him a well-deserved place among Oklahoma’s finest teachers.
A Passion for Excellence in Education
With an extensive background in biomedical sciences and a steadfast commitment to student success, Mr. Riggs has transformed his classroom into a hub of innovation, hands-on learning, and career exploration. His Biomedical Innovations program offers students unique opportunities to gain real-world experience in medical fields, connecting them with nursing, research, public health professionals, and beyond.
“Teachers should vigorously engage students and create a classroom environment of excellence where excellence is in the DNA of the class culture,” says Riggs. “Outstanding teaching, regardless of the individual student’s caliber, should always yield improvement in their self-efficacy and learning.”
His student-centered approach and high-impact teaching strategies have led to remarkable student achievements, with 98% of participants in the Biomedical Sciences program continuing to post-secondary education. Under his guidance, Claremore students have secured prestigious internships, gained acceptance into top medical programs, and entered competitive healthcare careers.
Beyond the Classroom: A Mentor and Leader
Mr. Riggs' influence stretches beyond the walls of Claremore High School. He has built strong partnerships with local hospitals, universities, and industry professionals to provide students with real-world learning experiences. Through the Biomedical & Healthcare Careers Club he leads, students connect with doctors, nurses, researchers, and medical professionals who provide mentorship and career guidance.
One of his most impactful initiatives is the "Operation Orange" program, a free day camp sponsored by Oklahoma State University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine, where students engage in medical simulations and hands-on activities. These experiences expose students to various healthcare professions, igniting a passion for medicine and paving the way for future careers.
A Vision for the Future of Education
Before transitioning into teaching, Mr. Riggs served in the United States Air Force. He built a career in the biomedical technology industry, where he trained physicians on cutting-edge medical advancements. His journey from military service to industry leadership to education has shaped his philosophy of teaching as a "contact sport," which requires continuous engagement, relationship-building, and a commitment to student success.
He strongly believes in preparing students not just academically but also in transportable skills such as critical thinking, collaboration, and adaptability. All are essential for success in the workplace, college, military, and beyond.
“Teaching is fulfilling and deeply rewarding to me,” says Riggs. “I have the privilege of witnessing students overcome challenges, grasp new ideas, and grow into confident, capable individuals ready to impact their communities.”
