Strengthening the Arts: Dr. Schuyler Adkins Named Executive Director of Fine Arts at CPS
Claremore Public Schools (CPS) is thrilled to announce the appointment of Dr. Schuyler Adkins as the new Executive Director of Fine Arts. This strategic appointment follows the recent resignations of two esteemed leaders at the Robson Performing Arts Center (PAC), Ruby and Pam. In response, Superintendent Bryan Frazier engaged with fine arts teachers to collaboratively cast a new vision, solidifying the arts as a core pillar of education at CPS. Through these discussions, the team identified key resources, curriculum needs, and opportunities to enhance the role of the PAC within the district and the broader Claremore community.
Dr. Adkins, a familiar and well-loved figure within CPS, brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He has served as Principal of Westside Elementary and Assistant Principal of Claremont Elementary, as well as a music and theater teacher across various educational levels in Broken Arrow, Oologah, Dewey, and Tulsa. His academic credentials include a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Missouri Southern State University, a Master of Music from Oklahoma City University, and a Doctor of Education in Administration, Curriculum, and Supervision from the University of Oklahoma.
With 18 years in public and higher education, Dr. Adkins has demonstrated a profound commitment to both arts and educational leadership. His fusion of these passions will guide his efforts to enrich and grow the fine arts presence across Pre-K through 12th grade within CPS. Dr. Adkins shared, "I believe in the power of culture, and I am committed to fostering a positive environment where students know they are loved and cared for by staff who embrace a culture of trust, grit, and a growth mindset."
In his new role, Dr. Adkins will oversee all aspects of the fine arts programs from Pre-K through 12th grade, including the management of the Robson Performing Arts Center. His leadership aims to maximize the PAC's role in education and community engagement, enhance educational and community involvement, and increase the use of the PAC for outside organizations.
Dr. Adkins emphasized the importance of collaboration among all stakeholders, stating, "This position should be a master teacher, a leader to staff and students, and an ambassador to the stakeholders within the community. I plan to embody these qualities by being a hard-working, detail-oriented, trustworthy, teachable, fair, relational, and consistent servant leader."
One teacher noted, "The person in charge of the PAC should have technical expertise and be a beacon for the community and the school. Marketing the PAC is important to draw in shows and involve the community more.” Dr. Adkins' experience and passion for promoting the arts and education fuels his desire to accomplish this goal. Another focus group participant added, "A Fine Arts director could help with professional development, bringing in guest speakers and artists, and evaluating the Arts curriculum. This role would also support teachers in the Arts." Dr. Adkins’ background in music and theater education at all levels makes him uniquely qualified to fulfill these aspirations.
"We are incredibly excited for the future of the arts in Claremore," Dr. Adkins stated. "Claremore has a strong reputation for educational excellence with diverse and enriching opportunities for students, along with a powerful sense of community pride. I am proud to be a Zebra and look forward to fostering strong partnerships within our community."
As Claremore Public Schools moves forward with long-range planning for the arts, Dr. Adkins' leadership and vision will be crucial in achieving these ambitious goals. His extensive background and experience make him the ideal person to lead CPS Fine Arts and shine the spotlight on Claremore and CPS.
