Catalayah Elementary

This week Mrs. Cole's classes are making dinosaur eggs. On Friday, the kids will crack them open and look to see what kind of dinosaur is inside. They are learning to measure, explore, match sets of dinosaurs to numbers, build dinosaurs with pattern blocks, graph and learn about the job of a paleontologist. Stay tuned for more pictures of the dinosaur lessons. 🦖🦕

Mrs. Casey's class has been learning about Martin Luther king Jr. and his famous I Have a Dream speech. Each of the students then shared what their dream is for when they grow up. #CPSZEBRAPRIDE

In 5th grade Science the students were assigned a project about reducing our impact on Earth's systems. They were given criteria of making a fun pet toy out of materials they had at home. Their goal was to learn about how we can reduce our impact by reusing materials to make things instead of buying new items. They presented their toys to the class and received feedback about how their product could be improved. They were very creative and their excitement for this project really showed!! #CPSZEBRAPRIDE

Mrs. Ward’s class read Martin’s Big Words. All of the students felt true compassion and sadness for the way African Americans were treated during this time. A few even cried. I can’t emphasize enough how much I love the hearts of these kids! Parents, you are doing an amazing job teaching them how to love and treat others! ❤️ Later in the day they wrote about dreams they have to make the world a better place! 💕 #CPSZEBRAPRIDE

Cowboy Bart came to Catalayah this week!! He talked about Will Rogers and his life in Claremore, showed us some really cool rope tricks and also talked to us about the diorama contest. We are getting ready for the 4th annual Will Rogers Diorama Contest! Starting now through February 9th, we are asking 3rd graders to learn about Will Rogers and be inspired to create your own Dioramas! Make sure to return your completed projects to your school by no later than February 9th. Diorama's will be displayed and voted at the Will Rogers Memorial through February and March so make sure you bring your friends and family by to vote! Voting will end March 15th and winners will be announced March 17th at 3pm at the Mid-Afternoon Frolic Talent Show held at the Will Rogers Memorial Museum. We haven’t been meaning to keep secrets from you but we forgot to announce some big news….. Mrs. Lewis got married in December!!!! Her name has changed to Mrs. Basks!! If your kiddos come home talking about Mrs. Basks you can rest easy knowing they are talking about our sweet Assistant Principal Mrs. Lewis. Congrats Mrs. and Mr. Basks!!! #CPSZEBRAPRIDE

Look what these students made in Native American Club!! The students copied Indian bead designs and made coasters with Perler beads. They turned out beautiful!! #CPSZEBRAPRIDE

Our friends from the Oklahoma State Department of Health came by last week to present Nurse Shea and Catalayah with our Award of Excellence. Catalayah has obtained the Award of Excellence (which is the highest award!) 3 years in a row!!! #CPSZEBRAPRIDE

Mrs. Ward’s class reading series focused on our planet and the sun and how shadows are formed. They also read The Black Rabbit about a bunny and his shadow. During a sunny day at recess they remembered our stories and were interested in their own shadows! 🖤 #CPSZEBRAPRIDE

Our students are glad to be back at school!! They have enjoyed seeing their friends and we have all enjoyed the beautiful weather! #CPSZEBRAPRIDE
