Rising Star in STEM at Claremore Public Schools: Meet Ashley Henry

Ashley Henry’s journey in STEM education is nothing short of remarkable. With just two years of teaching experience at Claremore Public Schools, she has already earned recognition as a finalist for the 2024 Siegfried Excellence in STEM Education Award. Her innovative and inclusive approach to elementary education, combined with a passion for technology and hands-on learning, has quickly made her a standout in her field. This year, Ashley is expanding her influence by transitioning from a 3rd and 5th-grade teacher and after-school STEM club leader to an Innovation Lab (STEM) teacher, where she will reach even more students across two Claremore elementary schools.

A Passion for Aviation, Space, and Community Impact

Ashley’s dedication to STEM extends far beyond her classroom. Armed with a Bachelor’s in Elementary Education, a Master’s in Teaching, Learning, and Leadership, and a current pursuit of a Doctorate in Aviation and Space Education from Oklahoma State University, Ashley is committed to integrating advanced STEM concepts into her lessons. Her involvement with NASA’s STELLAR program, where she has transitioned from a student to a mentor, showcases her commitment to continuous learning and professional development. She has co-presented at the NASA Space Exploration Educators Conference (SEEC) and has represented Claremore’s legacy astronaut, Stuart Roosa, and the moon trees.

Her contributions to the Claremore community are equally impressive. In 2021, she co-organized the Space Day School & Community STEM event, which drew hundreds of participants and facilitated a stargazing event, bringing STEM learning to life for students and families alike. These efforts earned her the Claremore Chamber of Commerce Leading Ladies Rising Star Award in 2023, recognizing her leadership and impact on the community.

Her recognition as a finalist for the Siegfried Excellence in STEM Education Award places her among Oklahoma’s top educators. Joining her in this prestigious group are Lisa Wada from Central Middle School in Tulsa, Elaine Hutchison from Okeene Jr/Sr High School, and Doris Biegler from Lawton Public Schools. These educators, along with Ashley, are shaping the future of STEM education in Oklahoma.

The finalists will be honored at Tulsa Regional STEM Alliance’s Flight Night gala on Thursday, September 12, at Tulsa Technology Center’s Riverside Campus in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Each category winner will receive a $5,000 award, which includes a $4,000 grant for classroom enhancements or professional development and a $1,000 personal award.
