Westside students love to play sizzle, sizzle, boom to help study their weekly spelling words. Mrs. Stone's third grade students played a few exciting rounds before their test. Miss Ryanne was this round's winner. Keep up the fabulous work, third grade!

Every couple of weeks Mrs. Ratcliff draws a class to receive a prize to celebrate fun and often unknown national holidays. Today, Mrs. Campbell and her friends celebrated National Gourmet Coffee Day with some tasty treats. These students loved trying coffee cakes and coffee candies. They especially loved how everything smelled. These seemingly simple moments bring a lot of joy to our Westies!

Today, we celebrate the extraordinary life of activist and humanitarian Dr. King, who helped to teach us about courage, equality, truth, justice, compassion, and humility.
"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."
- Martin Luther King Jr.

This sweet second grade class utilized their Scholastic News magazines to learn about the impactful life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. They later used the information from the source to organize a timeline about his life.

In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Mrs. Gaylord's music class has been learning about his life and what he stood for. They discussed what dreams we have and how to make them a reality. They also took key words and found their rhythms, followed by making their own compositions with those words. This is a wonderful, creative way to honor the memory of Dr. King and develop musical knowledge.

Part of the reason Westside students and staff thrive is due to the culture that has been established throughout the building. One of our Great Expectations states, "We will recognize every effort and applaud it." This isn't just expected from the students, but modeled from everyone in the building. Staff regularly post shout-outs to show appreciation for the effort and dedication that is continuously shown. It's a great day to be a Zebra!

Mrs. Collins' second grade class read Hollywood Chicken this week. They practiced vocabulary by finding synonyms and using them in a sentence. Mrs. Collins gave each student a special rainbow pen as a gift! Students used these to illustrate what each vocabulary word meant. What a great way to make challenging tasks fun!

Coach Faulconer introduced fifth grade students to Fruit Loop tag. Players kick the hula hoop and try to avoid getting hit with the “fruit loop”. If you get hit, you go directly to the cereal bowl to do warm-up exercises like crunches and sit-ups. These Westies love the competition and good workout.
