Zebra Stripes Before and After School Program

When Kristen Campbell goes to work every Monday through Friday, her focus is to provide school-age children a positive lifestyle through teamwork.
“Kids are my passion,” Campbell said. “I want to help them in a positive way.”
Inside the Claremont Elementary School gymnasium, a message on the bulletin board speaks the mission statement of Zebra Stripes ... Together Everyone Achieves More.
Campbell, who grew up in Claremore and is a life-long Zebra, earned her stripes in 2000 and her passion for helping kids has allowed her to  give back to the public school system.
“Our program is designed to provide exceptional care for students in kindergarten through the fifth grade,” Campbell said. “The Zebra Stripes program offers activities that will be age appropriate and provide students with social, emotional and physical development.”
Campbell works in the Claremore Public School system as the School Age Coordinator.
“I was hired to create before and after school programs for the elementary schools,” she said. “The first site started in November 2010 and is held in the Claremont gym. We don’t only house Claremont students, but Roosa and CUE (Central Upper Elementary) students as well. The students are bused to their schools in the morning and we bus them to Claremont in the afternoon.”
Zebra Stripes is licensed through the Department of Health Services, and the teachers are employed at Claremont Elementary School.
According to Campbell, “All teachers are required to have training in school age care as well as CPR/First Aid.”
Daily activities include snacks in the afternoon, homework time and occasional games such as dodge ball, basketball or dog catcher.
“Homework is a given each day for all students,” Campbell said. “All students must do their homework or if they don’t have any, they must do a quiet activity. The teachers provide them with any help if needed.”
Campbell added that a second site will open at Westside when the 2011-12 school year starts in August.
“This will enable both sides of town to have access to the after school program,” Campbell said. “Westside will house Westside students as well as the new school.”
The Zebra Stripes before and after-school program at Claremont currently has 25 students but is licensed for 90. The program is held from 6:30 a.m. til school starts, and after school til 6 p.m.
The cost for the program is $10 per day (before and after school), $7 per day (after school) and $3 per day (before school). Also, it’s $5 (before and after school) for those who qualify for free and reduced lunches.
“There is a one-time enrollment fee of $15 and tuition is to be paid every two weeks,” Campbell said.
